The play guide
How to play Tic Tac Toe
The small board makes every square easy to inspect, but it also makes an overlooked threat decisive. A useful move can complete your line, block the opponent, or create more than one route to a future line. This guide focuses on the classic board because larger variants use different winning lengths.
Your goal
On the 3-by-3 board, make a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line of three marks before the opponent.
Controls
Click or tap an empty square during your turn to place your mark. Choose the classic 3-by-3 board for the rules described in this guide.
Your first round
- Choose a mode and the 3-by-3 board.
- Before placing a mark, check whether either player has a line that can be completed immediately.
- Place your mark to win, block a win, or develop a future line; continue until a player wins or the board draws.
This guide is based on the supplied game instructions.
Tips for your next attempt
- Check immediate winning and blocking moves before choosing a generally useful square.
- The center participates in four possible lines, so notice who controls it.
- Look for a fork: a placement that threatens two lines can require more than one defensive answer.
Watch out for
- Building your own line without checking the opponent's two-in-a-row can lose on the next turn.
- The three-in-a-row rule in this guide should not be assumed for the larger board variants.
